Intensive Legal English

Who should take this course?

This program is for students with advanced proficiency in English who have a minimum of 4 - 6 months of previous legal studies or law-related work experience, and who are interested in both improving their English skills while learning about the U.S. legal system. Advanced levels of English proficiency only.

Other Admission Requirements:

  • Student must have a language proficiency score of 90 iBT or IELTS 8.0

  • Students must submit a brief statement to explain previous law-related coursework or work experience, and purpose of taking this program.

Other Requirements to be submitted 30 days before the published program start-date:

  • TB Assessment Form (sent at the time UC San Diego Extension International Programs sends acceptance materials)

  • Medical Insurance Verification form (if student chooses to use their own medical insurance and not UC San Diego Medical Insurance). For the minimum coverage requirements click here

  • January 7 - March 22
  • April 1 - June 14

Program Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday

  • Classes are held between 8:30 - 4:30 PM

  • 11 weeks - 25 hours per week (First week is testing, orientation & registration)

  • Schedule varies depending on classes chosen

Special nine-hour core class providing:

  • A review of the U.S. legal systems

  • Trial procedures

  • Landmark cases

  • Social/cultural trends that affect the law

  • Guest lectures by legal scholars and practicing attorneys

  • Readings, vocabulary study, discussions

  • Participant presentations

  • Class excursions to a courthouse or other site related to local law services

Grammar (4 hours)

An additional 12 hours per week chosen by students from this list:

  • Advanced Vocabulary

  • Advanced Current Events

  • Advanced American Business Studies

  • Academic Writing

  • Idioms for Business

  • Advanced Idioms & Slang

  • Advanced Academic Listening

  • Oral Presentations

  • TOEFL Prep
