Summer Intensive TEFL

Who should take this program?

Participants with very advanced English language proficiency can complete the six-month Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate program in one summer. Prospective students must have one of the following scores to participate in this program: 550 TOEFL paper-based, 79 TOEFL internet-based, 760 TOEIC, 6.0 IELTS, "Pass" on the Cambridge FCE or Advanced Exams, or 670 TEPS.

Other Requirements:

  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Copy of transcripts in English for the two most recent years of academic studies
  • A one-page statement explaining why you would like to take any TEFL Certificate program

Application fee, application, financial verification, and all supporting documents must be submitted prior to the application deadline.

What this program includes:

The curriculum consists of the following core courses:

  • Theory and Methods of Reading Instruction (27 hours)
  • Teaching Writing for Academic and Professional Purposes (27 hours)
  • Best Methods in Teaching Pronunciation and Fluency (27 hours)
  • Best Methods in Teaching Speaking Skills (27 hours)
  • Andvanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure - I (27 hours)
  • Theories of Second Language Acquisition (27 hours)
  • Best Methods in Teaching Listening Skills (27 hours)

In addition, three all-day Saturday workshops or one additional three-unit elective course must be completed. Students can choose from several, depending on what is being offered each quarter. Some examples are:

  • Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure - II
  • American Culture
  • Effective Oral Presentations for Teachers
  • Grammar and Editing
  • English in Business and Industry
  • Music or Games in the EFL Classroom
  • Computer-Assisted Language Learning
  • Teaching TOEFL Preparation
  • Pronunciation Workshop: Special Asian Needs

Cost (In U.S. Dollars):

Application Fee: $200 (non-refunable)

Tuition 2010: $7,500

Book/Materials: $200-500 per quarter
