Haney D. Hong


Haney Hong is President and CEO of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association, President and Trustee with the San Diego Taxpayers Educational Foundation, and the Principal Officer of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association Political Action Committee.

Additionally, he is a Captain in the US Navy Reserve, currently in command of a unit of approximately 90 professionals who augment the US Third Fleet during various naval operations.  He is an adjunct Lecturer at the University of California San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy. Haney is focused on robust citizenship engagement and firmly believes that such engagement is the first line of defense against internal and external threats to a healthy democratic society.

Haney also owns HDH & Associates, Inc., a management consultancy focused on responsible strategic planning and change management.

Prior to starting his consulting firm, he served on active duty in the United States Navy for approximately seven years. He served aboard USS Topeka (SSN 754) and deployed to the Western Pacific. Ashore, he was the Flag Lieutenant and Executive Assistant to the Commander, Navy Recruiting Command, from 2007-2008 before serving for two years in the Office of the Secretary of the Navy at the Pentagon, where his portfolio spanned a range of policy, strategy, and budgetary issues for the Department of the Navy.

Haney is a deeply committed volunteer to institutions that promote public service and public dialogue. He is a weekly “Econometer” panelist with the San Diego Union Tribune, as well as a Community Voices columnist.  

He is Chairman Emeritus of the Stanford Military Service Network and on the honorary board of the Harvard Kennedy School Community of San Diego and the University Club Atop Symphony Towers. He serves on the advisory board of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System. He was a Director with the Alfred and Jean Friendly Foundation, Feeding San Diego, and the Downtown San Diego Partnership and formerly a member of the National Navy Reserve Policy Board, a Congressionally-mandated advisory body to the Secretary of the Navy on reserve policy matters.

Haney graduated with an engineering degree from Stanford University in 2003 and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2012.

He was a Consulting Associate Professor for Stanford University’s Bing Stanford in Washington program from 2008-2010. Additionally, he was an International and Global Affairs Fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Studies and a Dukakis Fellow in the Office of the Governor of New York.

He is a recipient of the Stanford Associates Award of Merit, and he was selected as part of the Top 40 Under 40 Military Class of 2011. He was the Navy’s recipient in 2010 for the Federal Asian Pacific American Council Military Meritorious Service Award.

The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation featured Haney in “Today’s and Tomorrow’s Leaders of San Diego” at their 50th Anniversary dinner in 2015, and he received LEAD San Diego’s Herbert G. Klein Memorial Award for Exemplary Leadership in 2014. He has received various other personal and unit decorations as a military officer.
