Communication and Culture

Who should take this course?

This program is for students with a general interest in improving their English fluency, ability to speak and understand everyday spoken American English, and knowledge of American culture. All levels of English ability.

  • TB Assessment Form (sent at the time UC San Diego Extension International Programs sends acceptance materials)

  • Jan 7 - Mar 22
  • April 1 - June 14
  • June 24 - September 6
  • September 23 - December 6

Program Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday

  • Classes are held between 8:30 - 4:30 PM

  • 11 weeks - 20 hours per week (First week is testing, orientation & registration)

  • Schedule varies depending on level and classes chosen

Elective classes and various offerings each quarter. Typical examples are:

  • Vocabulary Development

  • Conversation

  • Writing development

  • Listening through music

  • Everyday English

  • Business Communication

  • Reading/vocabulary development

  • Idioms

  • TOEFL Preparation (levels 103/104)

  • Intermediate American Culture

  • Vocabulary/Discussion through TV/Video

High Intermediate and advanced levels (determined upon arrival)

Required classes:

  • Core classes for fluency and comprehension

  • Grammar skills class

Elective classes:

  • Idioms and slang

  • Conversation

  • Academic writing (from level 106)

  • Reading & Writing

  • American Music

  • American Culture

  • American Film

  • Grammar Seminar (from level 106)

  • TOEFL/ TOEIC Preparation

  • High Intermediate film

  • Oral Presentation

  • Current Events

Books/Materials: Approximately $250
