Intensive Pre-University Program

Who should take this course?

Students who have completed at least one 10-week English language program at UC San Diego-ELI at an advanced proficiency level, who demonstrate superior performance in their home universities (students must provide a copy of the university transcripts and demonstrate that they are in the top 10% of his/her home university), and who have achieved high final grades in all classes can be considered for admission to the Intensive Pre-University (IPU) program.

The UC San Diego Academic Advisor will explain the academic selection criteria and language proficiency requirements to interested students who are currently studying at UC San Diego-ELI. Student who have not completed at least one quarter of successful studies at UC San Diego-ELI in the quarter prior to the desired IPU program start-date may not apply to the IPU program. Students take a combination of English language courses and university and/or university extension credit courses. Low-advanced and advanced levels only.

Other Requirements to be submitted 30 days before the published program start-date:

  • TB Assessment Form (sent at the time UC San Diego Extension International Programs sends acceptance materials)

  • Medical Insurance Verification form (if student chooses to use their own medical insurance and not UC San Diego Medical Insurance). For the minimum coverage requirements click here

  • January 7 - March 23
  • April 1 - June 14
  • June 24 - September 7
  • September 26 - December 14

Program Schedule:

  • 11 weeks

  • Schedule varies depending on level and classes chosen

What this program includes:

  • 9 - 17 hours/week of English language instruction

  • 1 - 2 University or University Extension courses (enrollment is on a space-available basis; credits may be transferable to degree programs)

  • Academic advising throughout the quarter

  • Core classes for fluency and comprehension

  • Wide variety of courses for academic preparation and cultural understanding.

  • Students with strong academic records and very advanced English skills may prefer to enroll in the University and Professional Studies Program.
