Special Studies in TEFL

Who should take this program?

This is a three-month program of select courses in TEFL and other academic areas to enhance teacher preparation. Students must choose and enroll in a total of 12 UC San Diego Extension units, with the advice and approval of the TEFL Coordinator.

Admission Requirements

The minimum requirements to be accepted into this program are listed below. We carefully review the background and qualifications of each applicant to ensure that those admitted into the Special Studies in TEFL program will have a successful experience.

 

Language Requirement

Prospective students must have one of the following scores to participate in this program:
  • TOEFL paper-based: 540
  • TOEFL internet-based: 78
  • TOEIC: 740
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • Cambridge Advanced or Proficiency Exams: Pass
  • TEPS: 660

 

Other Admission Requirements:

  • Copy of transcripts in English for the two most recent years of academic studies

  • A one-page statement explaining why you would like to take any TEFL Certificate program

 

Other requirements to be submitted 30 days before the published program start-date:

  • TB Assessment Form (sent at the time UC San Diego Extension International Programs sends acceptance materials)

  • Medical Insurance Verification form (if student chooses to use their own medical insurance and not UC San Diego Medical Insurance) For the minimum coverage requirements click here

Application fee, application form, financial verification, and all supporting documents must be submitted prior to the application deadline or students must pay a TEFL late-submission fee. Please see "costs" below.

 

Length of Program:

  • Approximately 3 months

  • Schedule varies depending on courses chosen

What this program includes:

The curriculum consists of the following core courses:

  • Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure II (3 units)

  • Cross-Cultural Issues for Language Teachers (3 units)

Participants must choose an additional 6 units from among the many courses and workshops offered each quarter in the TEFL Certificate programs.

Cost (In U.S. Dollars):

Application Fee: $200 (nonrefundable)

Tuition: $4,750

Book/Materials: $200-500 per quarter

(Payment for all books and instructional materials CANNOT be made in advance and are to be purchased upon arrival at UC San Diego.)

International Student Services Fee: $350

TEFL Late-Submission Fee (if submitted past deadline):$100

Program Change Fee: $150

PLEASE NOTE

Students who transfer directly from a 10-week UC San Diego-ELI English program or UC San Diego-ELI TEFL program will get a $250 USD discount on their tuition for the Special Studies in TEFL program.
