Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Proficiency

Who should take this program?

This three-month course is a foundation course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) for non-native English speakers.

What this program includes:

The curriculum consists of the following core courses:

  • Introduction to Teaching and Writing (27 hours)
  • Oral Presentations for Language Teachers (27 hours)
  • Introduction to Pronunciation and Fluency for Language Teachers (27 hours)
  • Introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (27 hours)

Note: Application fee, application form, financial verification, and all supporting documents must be submitted prior to the application deadline or students must pay a $100 USD TEFL late-submission fee.

Admission Requirements:

The minimum requirements to be accepted into this program are listed below. We carefully review the background and qualifications of each applicant to ensure that those admitted into the TEFL Proficiency program will have a successful experience.



Language Requirement

Prospective students must have one of the following scores to participate in this program:

  • TOEFL paper-based: 525
  • TOEFL internet-based: 69
  • TOEIC: 690
  • IELTS: 6.0
  • Cambridge FCE or Advanced Exams: Pass
  • TEPS: 600
Additional Admission Requirements:
  • Copy of transcripts in English for the two most recent years of academic studies
  • A one-page statement explaining why you would like to take any TEFL Certificate program


Program Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday, occasional Saturdays
  • Daytime and evening courses
  • Schedule varies


Most classes are held on the UC San Diego Extension campus in La Jolla or at the off-site University City Center near to campus.

Access to a car or other reliable transportation is required for evening and off-site classes.

Cost (In U.S. Dollars):

  • Application Fee: $200 (nonrefundable)
  • FedEx fee: $50 (optional, but recommended)
  • 2014 Tuition: $4,750
  • International Student Service Fee: $350 per quarter
  • Books/Materials: Approximately $200-$800 per quarter
    (Payment for all books and instructional materials CANNOT be made in advance and are to be purchased upon arrival at UC San Diego.)

Note: Students who transfer directly from a 10-week UC San Diego-ELI English program or UC San Diego-ELI TEFL program will get a $250 USD discount on their tuition for the TEFL Proficiency program.
