TEFL Seminar for Professionals (2-Weeks)

Who should take this seminar?

The TEFL Seminar for Professionals is for EFL teachers who have at least 3 years of EFL classroom teaching experience. It focuses on increasing the participants' knowledge of and creativity in the best methods of teaching English in non-immersion settings with emphasis on the teaching of effective communication skills in speaking, listening, and writing. For high-intermediate and advanced levels of English proficiency. Note: This is a part-time English language program, and does not meet the requirements for the F-1 student visa.

The seminar features a strong experiential emphasis consisting of expert guest speakers, lesson planning, micro-teaching, and optional class observations. The TEFL Seminar for Professionals will be organized around some of the following training and activity components, with the exact schedule and content for each offering dependent upon the availability of expert trainers for the program:

  • Applying linguistics to EFL learning: Instruction on and practical teaching applications of morphophonolgy and suprasegmentals of standard American English

  • Materials and methods for effective lesson planning, including presentation "polish" for effective teaching and public speaking
  • Communicative teaching techniques and lesson planning for student-centered learning
  • Teaching English grammar - pointers and tips
  • Activities to enliven the English language classroom (games, songs, rhythms)
  • Observation of a UC San Diego-ELI English language class during the second week (optional)
  • Guest speakers in topics such as "Business English," "Culture Studies in the Language Classroom," "Tips for Teaching TOEFL Preparation," etc. (optional)

Program Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday

  • 2 weeks

  • 15 hours per week, schedule varies

Applicants must submit the following with the application:

  1. Applicants must have at least 3 years of EFL classroom teaching experience

  2. Professional work resume

  3. Statement of Purpose which includes a self-assessment of English proficiency at a high-intermediate level or higher. If the applicant has not been teaching EFL in the past two years, then proof of English proficiency by a third party will be required as part of the application.

Application Fee: $150 (non-refundable)
Tuition: $1800 (instructional materials included)
International Student Services Fee: $140

UC San Diego Medical Insurance (if selected): $45 per week
