Marine Biodiversity and Conservation Certificate

The Advanced Certificate in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (AC-MBC) is a unique program of study equipping professionals with the knowledge they need to improve conservation of marine biodiversity in the world's most diverse and threatened eco-regions through development of local capacity and science-based management tools. Led by the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (CMBC) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD, it is designed to teach current and future professionals about marine ecosystems from the scientific, economic and policy perspectives, as well as provide important cultural and communications skills.

Conditions for Admission

The AC-MBC is available during summer quarter only. Prospective candidates must submit and complete the online application for certificate admissions, one set of official transcripts from each institution attended after high school, three letters of recommendation, and a current résumé or c.v. The GRE/GMAT is not required. It is strongly recommended that candidates have a minimum of two years of relevant work experience. International applicants must submit official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applications must be submitted no later than May 15, 2010 (online application>).

Certificate Guidelines

The AC-MBC is an intensive 10-week summer program starting in June 2010. It is full-time, 5 days per week, 8 hours per day and consists of lectures, lab, fieldwork, and tours. To receive the certificate students must successfully complete the entire 16 unit summer program.

The tuition and fees for the AC-MBC are approximately $10,000, plus living expenses for 10 weeks.

The Advanced Certificate in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation may be applied towards the Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation, mbc.ucsd.edu, which is a full time 12-month program.

Please note that next summer’s certificate program enrollment will be limited to 3-4 students. Lectures and labs are held at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the UCSD campus.
