Conditions for Admission

The applications for the 2024-2025 cohort will open during Summer 2024. Applications are due by September 2, 2024. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by September 10, 2024.

Any UC San Diego graduate student or postdoctoral scholar in good standing is eligible to considered for acceptance into the program. To ensure a diverse cohort, applicants will be evaluated based upon:

  • Year in program and/or advancement to candidacy status
  • Area of study or research interest
  • Employment & volunteer history
  • Statement of interest

At this time, only current UC San Diego graduate students and postdocs are permitted to participate in the Leadership Teamwork Certificate. Applicants that do not match this profile will not be admitted.

Next Steps Experience

This certificate is part of a campus-wide initiative called Gradvantage. Gradvantage was designed to provide a suite of resources to help participants develop essential leadership, teamwork, and communication skills to become successful leaders in their field. The Gradvantage program also includes monthly Career Nights to network with industry professionals, communication workshops, and other programs and resources.

Gradvantage is partnership between the UC San Diego Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, Graduate & Professoinal Student Association, Career Services Center, Office of Postdoctoral Scholar Affairs, and the Division of Extended Studies. Who is eligible to participate in this certificate program?

Any current UC San Diego graduate student or postdoctoral scholar in good standing is eligible to be considered for acceptance into the Leadership and Teamwork certificate program. Each year, one cohort of forty students will be admitted into the program.

At this time, only current UC San Diego graduate students and postdocs are permitted to participate in the Leadership and Teamwork certificate program. Applicants who are not current UC San Diego graduate students or postdocs will not be admitted.

When are the applications due? When will I know if I am accepted into the program?

The applications for the 2022-2023 cohort are now open. Applications are due by December 2, 2022. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by December 6, 2022.

Are there any prerequisites to this program?

There are no prerequisites for the Leadership and Teamwork certificate program.

How long does it take to complete the certificate?

Students will complete the full program in six months.  Following the orientation on December 13, 2022, the first course starts on January 4, 2023 and the final course concludes on June 6, 2023.

When are the courses scheduled?

Courses will run virtually (live online) Tuesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

Can any of the courses be waived if I have taken a similar course elsewhere or have equivalent working knowledge?

The certificate program is designed to be a comprehensive experience, completed from start to finish by the same cohort of students. Due to this team-oriented nature of the program, you may not waive any of the program’s courses.
