Nature Photography: From Vision to Print
9 weeks | $425 | Live Online w/ In-Person Field Trips
Learn how to take beautiful nature photographs and examine different methods to produce and display them. This practical, hands-on course covers the aesthetics of fine art nature photography as well as fine tuning your technical skills in the field. The class features a variety of field trips designed to offer a wide variety of opportunities and challenges: Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla Cove, San Diego Botanical Gardens, and Balboa Park. Students will learn to identify their creative point of view, sharpen their skills through participation in field trips, and prepare a selected group of images for sale and/or exhibition in a show hosted by the class. Final photographs can be presented either as greeting cards or as matted prints.
Please note: For spring 2024, classes will be taught Wednesday's, 6-9pm live online via Zoom with 3 outdoor in-person field trips taking place on Saturday evenings. The field trips will take place in the greater San Diego region. For the optimal experience, we strongly recommend students are located in the Greater San Diego Region. Non-local students are welcome to take the course, but will not reap the full benefits of in-person instruction. For non-local students, the field trips will be self-guided.

Prerequisite: Photo I: Aperture, Shutter Speed, & ISO (ART-40629) or equivalent experience.
Materials/Software/Hardware: Fully adjustable DSLR camera or prosumer camera. Image editing software.
Note: Elective course for Photography: Images and Techniques professional certificate.

Girard, Dan
Dan Girard teaches Nature Photography: From Vision to Print for the Photography: Images and Techniques certificate program . Dan earned his B.S. in Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Arizona State University. He is a scientist in the local biotechnology industry in San Diego doing antibody drug discovery and engineering. Dan is an avid backpacker, world traveler, photographer, lifelong learner, and teacher. He has been obsessed with photography for over 15 years and his passion for learning brought him to the Photography: Images & Techniques program at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies, which he completed in 2017.
