Cultural Competency and the Latino Patient

As the number of Spanish-speaking patients has increased, so has the need to better understand how culture, values and traditions influence healthcare behavior and beliefs. After taking this course, providers will better understand how to assess a patient’s level of cultural assimilation and the ways that affects health disparities and mental health, how to better elicit a medical history and counsel patients with treatment options, and will learn about alternative treatments, myths and beliefs toward the cause and treatment of disease and the culture expressions to describe them. Special emphasis will be placed on counseling diabetic patients with regard to nutrition, use of insulin, and fears and myths about diabetes. Although the course is presented in English, helpful Spanish phrases are included.

Other Credit: 12 hours of nurse relicensure credit.
