Writers Workshop: Using the Senses
"But all art is sensual.... It is directly, that is, of the senses, and since the senses do not exist without an object for their employment all art is necessarily objective. It doesn't declaim or explain, it presents," wrote William Carlos Williams. There are authors who create wonderful plots, but whose characters and narrative nevertheless leave readers unengaged, aloof. Plot alone doesn't make good writing. Story only truly comes alive when words mimic reality through presentation of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. In this workshop, you will discover how to spark your writing by engaging the senses, by showing not telling, through lecture, in-class exercises, and group read-and-critique.
