This course will explore the complexities of English language structures and how and when they are used (pragmatics). There will be special emphasis on those areas of syntax which are unique to English and most troublesome to non-native speakers, including both prescriptive and descriptive forms. 


Areas covered:
  • syntactic variations related to gender, age, sociocultural linguistics, and other factors
  • the important connection between syntax, morphology, and semantics
  • how best to teach and integrate the practice of these features in all types of EFL lessons

Note: A strong command of English is a prerequisite for this course. (iBT TOEFL:80, TOEIC:760)

Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure I and Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure II do NOT have to be taken in any particular order.

This is a required course for the Professional Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program.
