Features of English phonetics, phonology, stress, and intonation will be drawn on to enrich instruction in best practices for teaching and learning pronunciation in a TEFL environment.
Going beyond discrete sounds, this course will focus on the suprasegmental aspects of English pronunciation for both formal and informal situations such as:

stress

rhythm
-
pitch
-
intonation patterns
Specific techniques for accent reduction, plus important information on body language for clear communication in English, will be presented. Lastly, the course will emphasize the integration of pronunication instruction and practice in all types of lessons.
Note: A strong command of English is a prerequisite for this course. (iBT TOEFL:80, TOEIC:760)
This is a required course for the Professional Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate program.

Jessica Quinn has been an ESL instructor for the English Language Institute (ELI) at UC San Diego Extension since June 2011. She attended UCLA and San Diego State University, where she earned a master's in applied linguistics, before beginning her career teaching at several community colleges and intensive English programs in the San Diego area. She has taught ESL in California and abroad at all levels and in all skill areas, including reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as grammar, vocabulary and test preparation.
