Hugo Villar Portrait

Hugo Villar, Ph.D

Dean of UC San Diego Extension

Hugo Villar has over 22 years of experience in the life sciences industry. He is the president of Altoris, Inc., a local consulting firm focusing on chemoinformatics and molecular modeling, multivariate analysis, discovery informatics and intellectual property and evaluation. Villar specializes in the evaluation and development of technologies for drug discovery. In particular, software applications to problems in the life sciences, with an emphasis in chemistry. He served as the vice president of Chemoproteomics at Triad Therapeutics and vice president of Discovery Technologies at Telik, Inc. Villar has a Ph.D. in chemistry and an MBA (Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals) from the University of Colorado.

Edward Abeyta, Ph.D

Associate Dean of UC San Diego Extension for Education and Community Outreach

Edward Abeyta's previous title was Associate Dean for Community Engagement and Director, Pre-Collegiate and Career Preparations Programs. Before joining UC San Diego Extension in 1995, Abeyta began his service at UC San Diego as a counselor for the Early Academic Outreach Program serving underrepresented students in San Diego high schools and later assumed the role of Registrar and Director of Academic Services at UC San Diego Extension. He has a B.A. from the University of New Mexico, an M.A. from the University of San Diego and his Ph.D. in Post-Secondary Adult Education from Capella University. Ed has been recognized by UC San Diego and the UC Office of the President for his involvement in staff diversity and development initiatives. In 2008 he was selected to a two-year term as the Staff Advisor to The Regents. He currently serves on the UC Diversity Commission, Post-retirement Task Force, and The Regents UC Commission on the Future.

Patricia Juza, M.A.

Associate Dean of UC San Diego Extension & Executive Director of Student Affairs and International Programs

Patti Juza is an industry leader in international education. She has held numerous leadership roles on international education boards, including EnglishUSA, NAFSA Region X, and New York State TESOL. Most recently, Patti served as UCIEP President. She earned a Master of Arts in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Cornell University. She has overseen Continuing Education auxiliary international education units at the University of Colorado Boulder and Baruch College, City University of New York.

Morgan Appel, Ph.D

Assistant Dean of UC San Diego Extension for Education and Community Outreach

Morgan Appel oversees a diverse array of programming for PK-post retirement, including opportunities for students, practitioners, administrators, parents, and community stakeholders. He previously served as Director of Education Programs at UC Irvine's Division of Continuing Education (DCE) following a research appointment at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts at UC Irvine. With expertise in education transformation and policy, Appel has worked with a number of school districts, universities, and research institutes to explore the impacts of legislated and organically-generated change agentry across segments of education. Professional specialties include gifted and talented education; the neuroscience of teaching and learning; arts integration; and organizational behavior in educational institutions. Beyond his current administrative appointment, Appel teaches a variety of courses at both UC San Diego and UC Irvine.

Laura Fandino Portrait

Laura Fandino, J.D., Ph.D.

Assistant Dean of UC San Diego Extension for Academic Affairs & Director of Science and Sustainability Programs

Laura Fandino also directs the university's public-facing Science & Sustainability programs. She is both a scientist and lawyer by training and received her Ph.D. in Marine Biology from UC San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and her J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law. Laura's scientific research primarily focused on the molecular ecology of bacteria associated with marine phytoplankton blooms, and she is published in the field of microbial ecology.

Josh Shapiro, Ph.D

Assistant Dean of UC San Diego Extension for Innovation and Research Affairs

Josh Shapiro has worked on evaluation projects covering a wide range of topics, including STEM education, health care, and the role of philanthropy in economic development. Dr. Shapiro was one of the core evaluators on the effectiveness of the Department of Labor's $500 million WIRED initiative. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology and worked as a public school teacher prior to pursuing his doctoral degree.

Collins Ejiogu, M.A.

Chief Administrative Officer of UC San Diego Extension

Collins Ejiogu oversees UCSD Extension’s wide-ranging business support efforts including Business Development and Marketing Services, Finance, Human Resources, Facilities, Real Estate and Design and Technology Services. Prior to joining Extension, Collins served as the Director of Financial Operations and Auxiliary Services at Claremont Graduate University within the Claremont Colleges. He specializes in accounting and finance, business operations and systems optimization, and has managed extensive business and finance portfolios in both higher education and industry. Collins holds a B.A. in Business Administration Information Systems from California State University, Fullerton, an M.A. in Higher Education Administration and Finance and a Certificate of Accounting from the University of California, Riverside.
