Ms. Mariscal is a senior instructor at UC San Diego’s English Language Institute (ELI) with over thirty years of experience teaching ESL/EFL across all skills and proficiency levels. She is a specialist in TOEFL preparation, scoring and item development, and consults for a publisher on TOEFL products. She has also taught a specialized writing seminar for psychiatrists at the VA hospital, and currently grades and edits manuscripts for medical researchers at UC San Diego.
Ms. Mariscal enjoys training and mentoring novice ESL teachers, providing guidance and feedback on materials, teaching practice, classroom management, lesson design and assessment instruments. She has taught two teacher-training courses in the UC San Diego TESOL Certificate Program—"Introduction to ESL" and "Teaching and Testing Speaking and Listening"— and given workshops for ELI instructors on diverse subjects including assessment, writing and TOEFL iBT. Ms. Mariscal has done seven presentations at CATESOL and TESOL on a range of topics from how to assess pronunciation to how to engage reticent students.
With expertise in designing curriculum, Ms. Mariscal developed the curricula for several ELI classes. Her interest in government and law led to her role in ELI’s launch of the Intensive Legal English Program, for which she developed the core curriculum. With expertise in both curriculum design and assessment, Ms. Mariscal has served as a member and/or chair of curriculum and assessment committees and played an active role in the successful application for CEA accreditation. Ms. Mariscal is excited to be a part of the TEFL team and looks forward to training tomorrow’s EFL teachers.
