This course builds on the knowledge gained in the Spectrum of Medical Writing course and introduces the student to some of the more complex topics in writing and editing scientific and medical materials. Topics include: choosing the best format for the topic, research report, clinical study report, grant proposal, review article, book chapter, poster, slide presentation or other; conceptualizing the topic, organizing the material, composing, drafting and revision; version control; manuscript preparation and submission; the editing of numbers, numerals, and units of measurement including SI units; tables and figures, and P values; drugs and equipment; organisms and pathogens; and nomenclature used in oncology, cardiology, and pulmonology. In addition to completing AMA-supplied homework on these topics, students will visit corresponding websites each week to complement their knowledge.
The Spectrum of Medical Writing and Editing (FPM-40653) must be completed prior to enrolling into Applied Medical Writing and Editing.

Florence Paillard is a scientific and medical writer for the biopharmaceutical industry. Working within R&D, clinical and marketing fields, she acquired experience in writing many types of documents, from scientific and review papers to regulatory documents to marketing communications. She is currently a free-lance scientific and medical writer.

Yeshi Mikyas, Ph.D. has 12 years of experience in medical writing in the pharmaceutical industry. She has been involved in writing a range of documents for medical communications—regulatory, safety and publications. She is passionate about empowering and encouraging medical writers to be strong effective partners within their teams.
She currently is the director of medical communication at MedImmune (a wholly owned subsidiary of AstraZeneca). In her previous roles, she has held positions at Amgen and Baxter/Baxalta (acquired by Shire).
