This course is designed to familiarize students with the research procedures and methods necessary for performing Institutional Research studies. Students will be able to utilize both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to analyze institutional databases and assess university outcomes, such as retention and degree completion rates. Students will also identify what indicators influence educational outcomes across diverse populations in California and, more broadly, the country as a whole. Students will receive hands-on experience by working on a research project through their internship.
Note: This is the second required course for the Specialized Certificate in Instructional Research. Introduction of Institutional Research is the first required course. The third required course is Diversity Research in Institutional Research. The courses may not be taken out of order. Admission to the program is required for enrollment in this program. Previously offered as BUSA 40915.
You must register for this course with the Letter Grade Option. If you do not then you must retake the course at your own expense with the Letter Grade Option in order to be eligible for the certificate at the end of the program.

Dr. Jacqueline Honda has worked in Institutional Research for over 20 years, in all three sectors of public higher education in California, including the California Community Colleges, the UC system and the California State University system, and is currently the Dean of Planning, Research and Institutional Effectiveness at Skyline College in San Mateo. After establishing the need to academically train institutional research professionals, she started the Institutional Research Certificate at Humboldt State in 2013, and has continued to teach in the program since. She is also responsible for coordinating internships for students in the program.
