In exchange for their time, talents and efforts, workers expect fair and motivating pay. This class covers the basics of compensation theory and practice. Job analysis and job evaluation, pay equity considerations, market rates and surveys, the various types of compensation, and other related topics of interest to human resources professionals will be explored. Students will be introduced to incentive pay concepts and to major pay regulations. Understanding will be reinforced with exercises and applied learning activities.
Other Credits: This course is approved for 27 hours of continuing education credit.
Note: Prerequisite is Managing Human Resources: An Overview. This course is an approved substitute for Understanding Employee Compensation (BUSA-40525) in order to meet the requirements of the legacy Human Resource Management Certificate.

Roy Burchill is currently the Principal Compensation Consultant at Sequoia Consulting Group in San Diego. He has been a consultant and a practitioner for almost 40 years. In addition to having senior level Compensation roles at large San Diego employers such as SDG&E, San Diego Unified School District, Great American Bank and Illumina, Roy was also the top HR executive at Gen-Probe and at Alphatec Spine. He has earned his Bachelors Degree in Economics from UCSD and completed the Human Resources Executive Program at Stanford University.
