Digital Skills for Editors (WCWP-40282)

Interacting in the digital space is becoming a frequently expected skill for freelance and staff editors. In Digital Skills for Editors, you will learn how to edit text for the particular needs of a website and its design. You will explore the basic terminology and tools in the relationship between text and search engine optimization, and gain a foundational understanding of digital editing best practices with an introduction to user experience and website planning. Your digital editing education is not complete until you have scratched the surface of navigating websites as an editor.
What You Will Learn:
- Understand how to navigate, critique and edit for digital.
- Gain the knowledge required for the digital editing space, whether that’s freelance or staff-level.
- Learn the vital skills required to understand digital media and best practices.
- Explore the basics of various types of interactive media—from video to blogs.
- Learn the purpose of cascading style sheets (CSS) and HTML works.
- Acquire skills in readability and searchability.
- Explore editing skills, digital rights, and search engine optimization (SEO) trends.

Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Students must be currently enrolled in, or have completed, Copyediting I (WCWP-40236) or have equivalent experience. Humphrey, Elizabeth King, Associate manager of corporate communications and a freelance editor, writer, and book designer.
Elizabeth Humphrey manages internal communications for a global contract research organization where she edits and writes. She freelances for publications and businesses and her credits include pieces for The Writer and Scientific American Mind. Although she has edited for years, Humphrey received her University of Chicago editing certificate in 2011 and a certificate in technical and professional communications in 2012. Her book writing credits include "Idiot's Guide: Gluten-Free Eating" (2014). She teaches Copyediting I and Digitial Skills for Editors for the Copyediting Certificate Program .
