In environmental portraiture, the surrounding background is used to convey crucial information about a subject's personality, interests,
and lifestyle. This course is designed to encourage the intermediate photographer to
examine and create environmental portraits. Our approach will focus on
fictional storytelling and/or reality-based portraiture--in other words, your backdrops need not be strictly factual. Each week, we will discuss assigned readings, study the work of contemporary portrait photographers, and engage in constructive class critiques of our weekly assignments.
