For over 30 years, UC San Diego Extension has provided high-quality leadership and management training to high-potential employees. The Essentials of Leadership and Management (ELM) program is the latest program that has been added to this reputable lineup.
Taught by a variety of faculty and subject matter experts, this highly interactive and practice-based virtual program helps develop exceptional leadership, communication, teamwork, project management, and presentation skills. With over 60 hours of learning, the instructional approach emphasizes team interaction, problem solving, personal reflection and peer coaching. Topics within the program are selected based on the immediate and practical needs of the participants. Case studies and business simulations offer timely, relevant and specific application to the unique environment of companies operating in a modern technology and global marketplace.
Upon program completion, ELM participants will be prepared for greater responsibility within their company. Sponsoring companies will see immediate improvement in managerial performance as a result of the concepts that are taught and the knowledge that is gained in the ELM program. Furthermore, the dynamic interaction between participants throughout the program builds valuable long-term relationships.

Program Topics
The ELM program is made up of two areas for employee development. The two modules build upon one another in sequence. Each module explores issues relevant to being a successful manager. Information, tools and models are presented in class with an emphasis on immediate and direct application. ELM draws heavily on the collective experience of the participants which come from a variety of companies. Participants work in virtual teams to apply concepts, examine case studies, and project assignments.

ELM is designed for mid-level professionals who are taking on leadership and management roles and need to enhance their skills and acumen.
Program Details
Program Dates and Times
ELM is offered three times per year, in Winter, Spring and Fall.
The live, virtual class sessions will meet one (1) time per week for five (5) hours over the course of thirteen (13) weeks.
Program Format
This program is delivered in a live online, synchronous format making the program available to national and international audiences. Synchronous web-based class meetings are scheduled to meet online at specific dates and times. The program uses a unique, online virtual reality platform called Virbela. The platform simulates a campus and classroom environment.

$4,900 USD
Fees are all-inclusive and account for tuition, books, and materials.
Tuition Reimbursement
Many companies sponsor employees to participate in programs an an integral part of the their management development efforts. The knowledge the participants gain in this program allows for them to better contribute to their company's success, both in fulfilling their current responsibilities and in working with other functional units to conceive and implement valuable new capabilities.

Each participant must complete an application and be admitted to the program. Application can be submitted any time via the online application form. Applicants are evaluated based on their academic and professional experience and current management duties to make sure they are a proper fit in the program.
