About the Functional Safety Engineering for Automotive Program

Automotive engineering, and especially autonomous mobility is a very promising field that involves numerous players, ranging from vehicle manufacturers (OEMs), automotive suppliers (Tier 1s), specific autonomous mobility solution providers (Tier 2s), to wide research, teaching, and engineering communities. As an integral part of autonomous and semi-autonomous driving solutions, it is evident that software role has become more prevalent and led to the growth of software engineering positions in the automotive industry.

Our program in Functional Safety Engineering for Automotive provides a clear transition path to automotive engineering concerning functional safety and the required development processes for software and computer engineers interested in entering this field.

This professional certificate aims to provide up-to-date content in the fields of system safety and functional safety design, encompassing system-level, hardware and software design of safety measures applicable in the automotive industry. Based on the functional safety design considerations this program covers relevant automotive functional safety standards including ISO 26262, as well as the correct use of development processes as key factors towards the mitigation of systematic faults (ASPICE).

Participants in this program will obtain practical skills through real-world projects of safety and functional safety in automotive, with adequate theoretical references.

Program Highlights

Functional Safety Engineering for Automotive builds upon Functional Safety Fundamentals for Automotive certificate and is comprised of four (4) required courses equivalent to 12 total units. The courses consist of both theoretical and practical examples that complement each other while deepening students’ knowledge in Functional Safety.

Our professional certificate will provide specialized education to students and professionals that would enable them to fill automotive engineering jobs, which requires an understanding of functional safety. The curriculum is applicable as a personal endeavor to strengthen the chances in job applications, but also as a regular onboarding procedure for companies that could be interested to ramp up the know-how of the newcomers to the field, which is growing rapidly.

Prerequisites

Students should have basic engineering knowledge in either one of the following disciplines: electrical engineering, computer engineering, or mechanical engineering.

  • Obtain essential knowledge and practical experience required by automotive industry companies to develop products and prove the safety cases following ISO 26262
  • Gain relevant experience through real industry projects.
  • Enable participants to participate on any safety-relevant design and implementation project
  • Taught by industry professionals with extensive experience in the domains of automotive engineering and functional safety
