This course is a continuation of the Introduction to Programming and Introduction to 3D Modeling courses. To take this course, student must have completed either Introduction to Programming and/or Introduction to 3D Modeling courses, or have prior consent from the instructor. Building on the knowledge students gained in their introductory classes, this class combines the best of both worlds in an exciting and challenging project: creating a videogame as a team. In this Game Studio class, students form collaborative groups or “studios” that will create a finished game/visualization product by the end of the course. Students will be allowed to choose what role they would like to hold during the course (artist, programmer, or both). For example, those selecting to be an artist will develop 3D models and animations for their team using Maya, becoming more involved with 2D graphic art elements using Gimp, and also work with the team programmers as their work is integrated into the final game. They will also be responsible for audio effects using the Audacity audio software. Students in the role of programmer will learn more advanced programming techniques such as integrating and controlling the artist’s animations, sound controls, and other game management techniques still using the C# language and the Unity game engine. Course topics will also focus on team building concepts such as project management, time allocation, and how to establish realistic benchmark goals and timelines. At the end of the course, each studio will present their finished project and receive feedback from their peers. This course is designed for students entering the 7th through 12th graders who have completed the required introductory course or have consent from the instructor.
