This will be an introductory course in the study of gems. We will identify local and southwestern gems and geodes. We’ll break open geodes, make art and jewelry using gemstones; and look for rocks to polish on the surrounding grounds of Mission Bay, which is an area of sandy former mudflats that harbors many fossil and rock specimens. Through a variety of hands-on activities we will discover the importance that rocks and gems have to our ecosystem and their importance in history, art and traditions.
