Getting Published: Navigating the Children's Book Market
Course Overview
This final, required course in the Children's Book Illustration Certificate and Children's Book Writing Certificate programs will guide you through the process of getting published, covering topics such as:
- Traditional & independent publishing options.
- Writing queries.
- How to choose professional representation (or self-management).
- Navigating contracts.
- Self-marketing techniques.
- Managing an effective online presence.
Throughout the course, you will also work on completing a portfolio of your work or a book dummy/proposal.
Open to students who have completed all other certificate requirements & electives.
Portfolio & Enrollment Information
Pre-approval is required before enrolling by submitting a portfolio to the Arts & Humanities Department during the quarter prior to the course start date (details are provided in the Portfolio Guidelines link below). Portfolios are reviewed to determine course enrollment eligibility. Eligible students will be notified and given instructions to enroll in this closed course via email.
PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Portfolios are accepted now through December 11, 2020.

Porinchak, Eve, An author and literary agent, Eve provides perspectives on publishing and demystifies the complexities of the business while guiding writers on their paths to publication.
Since earning a degree in Biology/Psychology from UCLA, Eve has lived all over the planet and spent much of her time in and out of jail – as a creative writing teacher for teen inmates. An agent with Jill Corcoran Literary Agency since 2012, Eve also serves as the Training Coordinator for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Los Angeles, where she recruits and trains Guardians ad Litem assigned to foster youth. A former medical student, child welfare social worker, and first grade teacher, Eve writes stories featuring youth she feels have been underrepresented in children’s literature, such as those born into gang life, the abandoned, and the incarcerated who – ironically - have the most fascinating tales to tell.
