An Indonesian Gamelan ensemble includes mostly percussive bronze instruments played with mallets. In this workshop, students will learn how to play traditional instruments from West Java and perform traditional repertoire as an ensemble. This music is associated with royalty and typically accompanies traditional dance, puppets shows and important events surrounding court life. In addition to learning how to play the instruments, we will also explore many cultural concepts and history surrounding this ancient music. The course will conclude with a performance that friends and family are invited to attend.

Note: This class is designed for middle school students. The Sally Ride Science Junior Academy courses are designed to inspire young adults to pursue careers in STE[+a]M.
