Reverse Engineering has proved to be an extremely powerful technique for solving from structural problems in equipment, re-engineering obsolete parts for US military ships, vehicles and helmets, to reverse engineering the human heart.
This course offers practical knowledge in SolidWorks and reverse engineering programs to bridge the physical to digital world through 3D scanning. Participants will have the opportunity to work with 3D scanners, HIPP software and a 3D point cloud processing program. Students will acquire hands-on experience with tools used in a number of engineering disciplines such as health care, entertainment, civil, aerospace, military, pump engineering, mechanical, nuclear, biomedical, to name a few.
- Instructions using SolidWorks ScanTo3D and HIPP modeling programs
- Reverse engineering techniques: calipers vs Hard probe vs scanning
- 3D scanning with Faro scan Arm , Blue Light scanner, white light scanner
- Point cloud processing
- 3D complex surface modeling
- Mesh to Surface deviation, GD&T, Go-No-Go inspection
- Creating reports for various designs
- Provide basic to advanced principles upon which the reverse engineering workflow method is applied to arrive at wire frame, solids or complex surfaces of 3D scanned models.
- Apply reverse engineering methods to problems that illustrate its principles and workflow against physical geometry under 3D scanning consideration.
- In class assignment applicable to work-related project using reverse engineering modeling process.
- Practical experience with relevant tools used in multiple industries.
Course Typically Offered: Online during Fall and Spring quarters.
Prerequisites: Knowledge of or have taken SolidWorks (MAE-40034) course is assumed.
