The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Specialized Certificate Program includes a Next Step Experience. This program is conducted in a dynamic environment using performance and process simulation, lecture, selected hands-on exercises, videos, case studies and an individual project and presentation. Upon completion of the actual-workplace project, students will have a framework for the successful implementation and deployment of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. Learning objectives include a thorough understanding of Lean and Six Sigma principles and tools, how the tools are effectively applied within a business, and how to incorporate measures and world-class metrics into any organizationâ€™s standard practices.

UC San Diego Extension programs are designed to best serve college-prepared working professionals. Although programs are open to all adult learners, where program capacity is limited, applicants with this profile will receive preference for admission.
To begin the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt program, students should possess basic computer skills and be familiar with PowerPoint® and Excel®. Participants should also have a general understanding of the skills involved in project management and leadership. All course materials will be provided to students, including computer software (SPC XL and DOE PRO) which aids in mathematical computations. Note that Green Belt training is not a prerequisite for this Black Belt program.
All attendees are strongly encouraged to attend an information/orientation session before starting the program. The information session allows students to meet instructor Ric Van Der Linden and hear specific details about the required course project. Attendees are often invited to listen to current Lean Six Sigma Black Belt students’ final project presentations. Click here to view and sign up for the next information session.
During the application process, a prospective student should consider possible projects from his or her current company or employer; the project will allow the student to apply learned tools and show quantifiable results. The instructor will mentor students from the start until completion of a successful project. Prospective students who are not currently employed are welcome to apply, and they should speak with the Program Manager about locating potential projects.

Yellow or Green Belt training is not a pre-requisite for this Black Belt program. Anyone interested in improving processes by way of structured methodology, statistics and team work are welcome to join.
To begin you should possess basic computer skills and be familiar with PowerPoint® and Excel®. Our philosophy is that Lean Six Sigma Black Belt should be taken in-class under the guided mentorship of a Master Black Belt. We offer a fully online Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program, in the Winter and Summer quarters.
This program is not industry specific. Organizations in every industry, and all sizes, can implement the Lean Six Sigma methodologies in order to improve business processes and achieve dramatic results. Local companies from a variety of industries participate in the Black Belt program, including:
The curriculum includes a structured course project to allow application of the Lean Six Sigma tools and deliver quantifiable results. During the application process, you should consider possible projects from your company. Some of the guidelines for the project include:
Class size is limited to allow for project mentorship.
The program is offered in-class over twelve sessions. The first eleven meetings take place on consecutive Fridays from 9am – 4pm. The twelfth session meets two months after the instructional training completes, in order to provide you ample time to work on their class project, under the guided mentorship of the instructor. The last session is designated for project presentations, and employers and colleagues are invited to join.
