On the Rise: San Diego Creates a Path for New CPAs

Not only do accountants enjoy well-above-average employment rates, their field has been growing unusually fast in our corner of the state. In San Diego County, the job market for accountants and auditors is expected to grow by 20 percent— that’s double the rate of its growth in California as a whole—over the next five years.

“The demand for accountants is strong,” says Joyce Short, UC San Diego Extension’s program manager of Accounting, Taxation and Business Analysis. Extension’s Accounting certificate and individual accounting courses position budding accountants and midcareer professionals alike to capitalize on this growth.

The open-enrollment, nine-course certificate program can be completed in 16 months at a cost of around $6,500 (no test scores are required to apply). Individual courses can be taken as needed, beginning with a quick and painless application.

Typical students have degrees in fields other than accounting. “We want to bridge that gap,” Short says. Extension’s online and evening class schedules are practical for working professionals and those transitioning from other careers. “Our courses serve as a pathway for students who want to become licensed CPAs or more knowledgeable in the field,” she adds. “We’re a resource for the community to reach their goals. Professionals should never be stagnant in their skill development.”
