Aditi Uppal: “Youth empowerment and teaching young people to be confident leaders is what inspires me.”
Aditi Uppal has only been in the U.S. since May 2014, but that’s been long enough to further energize her career ambitions.
“I want to be one of the women leaders of a multi-national corporation,” she said. “That’s my goal and I’ve planned my career accordingly.”
Her lofty aspirations will be enhanced with her selection as the most recent winner of UC San Diego Extension’s quarterly Bridge to Employment scholarship.
Uppal proudly notes that the award is her “first achievement” in this country.
The goal of the $5,500 Extension scholarship is to honor a recent college graduate who wishes to add skills to their resume – or shift to a new career – by enrolling in one of the more than 100 professional certificate programs offered by Extension.
Already the holder of an MBA from her native India, Uppal came to the U.S. with the goal of gaining “international experience for this complicated world,” she said. “All the leaders of the world have either been educated here or spent time here. You need to have these skills.”
Previously, she was a marketing manager and project manager with Castrol India, a subsidiary of British Petroleum, where she worked for three years following her graduate studies.
Uppal, 27, is currently serving as a 10-hours-per-week volunteer at Jewish Family Services of San Diego, a non-profit community service agency.
“I’m working now on a teen leadership program,” said Uppal, who also manages the agency’s social-media marketing and outreach. “Youth empowerment and teaching young people to be confident leaders is what inspires me.”
So far, she’s been impressed — even surprised — by the multi-ethnic environment of her Extension courses.
“Where I come from, everything is more uniform,” she said. “Here, you quickly realize the world isn’t just a few different cultures, it’s all different cultures and permutations of those cultures — even in business.”
