Among the many highlights of Founders Day’s activities last Friday was the booth hosted by UC San Diego Extension. With the backdrop banner emblazoned with “Amazing journeys start with the first step,” the booth proved to be a popular gathering place for passersby – including Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.
UC San Diego’s campus celebration of Founders Day (Friday, Nov. 14), featured a panel discussion with two former chancellors, Robert Dynes and Marye Anne Fox, who joined with Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla for a lively 60-minute conversation on the past, present and future of the university.

The event was videotaped by UCSD-TV for future airing. Another former chancellor, Richard C. Atkinson, was unexpectedly unable to attend.
Moderated by UC San Diego alumni director Armin Afsahi, the session at Price Center East brought forth a number of notable quotes, including:
- Chancellor Dynes, on his ongoing relationship with UC San Diego: “I still have a lab here. It’s incredibly exhilarating. It’s given me a sense of freedom that I never had before. Our job here isn’t done, it will never be done. … The university’s role is to ask questions that aren’t asked in other quarters. This university isn’t just a good research university, it’s a great research university.”
- Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, on the UC system: “The scholarly community and intellectual momentum of the UC system is unprecedented anywhere else in the world.”
- Chancellor Khosla, asked what has surprised him most: “I was surprised by the greatness, in spite of the bureaucracy. … My goal is to maintain the momentum that my predecessors have created. I’m not making any changes that will dissipate this momentum.”
