Guri Stark, Osher's popular art history and music lecturer has written a new book: "Third Wind and Three Oceans Away." The book includes two stories about intriguing, and at times impossible relationships. It shows us how these relationships develop and evolve, and ultimately get resolved.
The stories move between generations and between continents. From Israel to Poland, to USA, to Australia, to Buenos Aires... They bring an interesting perspective on life from a second-generation son to holocaust survivors.
Guri is happy to provide a signed copy if you email him at <gstark2000@yahoo.com>. Enjoy!

Meet the Lawyer for Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr.
A Conversation with Pioneering Civil Rights Hero Fred Gray
With OLLI instructor and speaker Doug Mishkin
Tuesday, January 12, 6pm EST
FREE and open to all
Online via Zoom: click here to register
Congressman John Lewis called Fred Gray one of "the Founding Fathers of modern America."
In 1958 Dr. King called him "the brilliant young Negro who later came chief counsel for the protest movement."
Fred Gray opened his law practice in Montgomery, Alabama in 1954 with the mission of "destroying everything segregated I could find." One year later, this rookie lawyer represented his friend Rosa Parks and Dr. King in the Montgomery Bus protests. That led to a career of landmark cases defeating segregation throughout Alabama, including the Supreme Court case of Gomillion v. Lightfoot, in which the Court rejected the racial gerrymandering of Tuskegee.
In his autobiography, Bus Ride to Justice, Gray also describes his representation of Claudette Colvin, the 15-year-old who was arrested on a Montgomery bus nine months before Rosa Parks; his securing an acquittal of Dr. King by an all-white jury in Montgomery of criminal charges of tax evasion; his role in investigating the infamous "Tuskegee Syphilis Study" and securing compensation for the numerous victims; and many other historically significant matters. In this conversation, you'll hear Mr. Gray talk about the judge whom in 1958 he complimented for being a fair judge who treated him courteously, and who went on to become the governor of Alabama--Governor George Wallace.
Mr. Gray will be interviewed by OLLI instructor and speaker Doug Mishkin, himself a lawyer. OLLI is pleased to offer this 90-minute free program on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 6:00pm Eastern/5:00pm Central time. We can think of no better way to honor the memory of Dr. King in anticipation of the January 18 Martin Luther King Day than to celebrate the achievements of his lawyer, Fred Gray.

Oceanids is having a talk on food insecurity and food banks today at noon.
Dana Henderson
Feeding San Diego
Hunger and Food Rescue: how we use food rescue as a tool for solving hunger in San Diego county while reducing our county's carbon footprint.
Feeding San Diego (FSD) provides more than 31.2 million meals to people facing hunger through a decentralized rescue and distribution network. We distribute meals in partnership with more than 320 local charities, schools, faith communities, meals sites, and food pantries. Through our decentralized model, we rescue high-quality food before it goes to waste from over 600 locations in San Diego County and over 225 farms and packing sheds throughout California.
An introduction to FSD’s decentralized model will discuss how diverting food from the landfill not only helps solve hunger in San Diego County, but also saves over 24,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent from being emitted into the atmosphere. In addition, we will discuss the impact of COVID on this model and the path forward.
Dana Henderson is currently the Director of Programs at Feeding San Diego and has been with the organization for five years. She has a BA from the University of California in San Diego in International Studies and an MA in Latin American and Hemispheric Studies from the George Washington University.
After graduate school, Dana gave a year of service through AmeriCorps VISTA at the International Rescue Committee in Silver Spring, MD and was subsequently hired, staying with the IRC for three years.
From there, Dana made the big decision to move to the Dominican Republic and spent two years working for a community based non-profit, before returning to San Diego to start her work with Feeding San Diego in December of 2015 as the Programs Manager.

The Madman Theory:
A Live Online Conversation about Trump's Foreign Policy
Chief National Security Correspondent for CNN
& New York Times bestselling author Jim Sciutto
with Politico reporter and Berkshire Eagle
advisory committee member Daniel Lippman
Wednesday, August 19, 7pm
Online via Zoom & free. RSVP to attend.
During the height of the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon employed an unusual scare tactic in his efforts to reach an honorable withdrawal. He led Vietnam to believe he was crazy enough to start a nuclear war. Nixon would come to describe his volatile approach of threatening unpredictability as “The Madman Theory.” From his first days in office President Trump has, both intentionally and by accident, employed his own “madman theory”, creating an unpredictable and unstudied foreign policy.
Join us for a live, online, interactive conversation featuring CNN's Jim Sciutto in conversation with Politico reporter Daniel Lippman. Your questions and comments are welcomed!
The event is free and open to all, but RSVPs are required. Click here to RSVP.
Jim Sciutto is CNN's chief national security correspondent and anchor of CNN Newsroom. After more than two decades as a foreign correspondent stationed in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, he returned to Washington to cover the Defense Department, the State Department, and intelligence agencies for CNN. His work has earned him Emmy Awards, the George Polk Award, the Edward R. Murrow award, and the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for excellence in presidential coverage. He is a graduate of Yale and a Fulbright Fellow.
In his new book,THE MADMAN THEORY: Trump Takes On the World (HarperCollins) CNN Chief National Security Correspondent Jim Sciutto reveals how Donald Trump has employed such a theory of his own and investigates what Trump’s erratic approach to foreign policy really means for the world and America’s place in it.
Featuring exclusive interviews with an array of current and former administration officials, including Fiona Hill, Susan Gordon, Steve Bannon, Peter Navarro, Joseph Yun andH.R. McMaster, THE MADMAN THEORY answers the critical questions provoked by the president’s chaotic take on foreign policy—has Trump made America greater or weaker? Safe or less safe? Smart, authoritative, and incredibly compelling, Sciutto’s definitive book explains exactly how Trump’s destructive diplomacy has disrupted the world order in these four years, and how hard it will be to restore it.
The event is free and open to all, but RSVPs are required. Click here to RSVP.

FREE: join the Embassy of Switzerland in the U.S. for June 2020 edition of Swiss Film Club, in celebration of Pride Month, featuring uplifting documentary Madame.
Madame takes us on a journey in which Caroline, a flamboyant 90-year-old grandmother, and her filmmaker grandson Stéphane explore gender identity in a patriarchal environment. Destined for a domestic life in the 1920s, Caroline manages to free herself from the clutches of a forced marriage and becomes a successful businesswoman, defying the social rules of her time. In parallel, Stéphane struggles to play the role everyone expects in his Swiss family, until the day he comes out of the closet and sets off on a crusade against homophobia and sexism. A family saga based on private archival footage, Madame offers a dialogue between this matriarch and her grandson, challenging the taboos of gender and sexuality.Participation in the Swiss Film Club is simple:
