Learn about the highly acclaimed UC San Diego Osher Lifelong Learning Institute: a membership program for individuals 50 years of age and older who are interested in pursuing intellectual interests and enriching their lives through lifelong learning. Join us for this Open House experience to learn about the upcoming quarter classes and seminars, the benefits of membership, and meet the volunteer leadership team. In additional, each open house showcases a mini lecture. The Spring 2024 Open House featured mini lecture takes attendees on a captivating jounrey through history, presenting "How the Number 13 Became Decisive in the Battle of Britain," by Maud Rao, Ph.D.

Spring 2024 Mini Lecture
Delve into the intriguing tale of the Battle of Britain with Dr. Maud Rao, a retired Chemical Engineer and passionate historian. Discover the pivotal role played by the Royal Air Force in defeating the Luftwaffe during this crucial WWII battle. Dr. Rao will unravel the fascinating events, personalities, and stroke of luck surrounding the development of 100 octane aviation fuel, a game-changer in the Battle of Britain. Don't miss out on this insightful talk that combines technology, history, and gripping storytelling!
Bio: Maud Rao is a retired Chemical Engineer. He has 36 years of industrial R&D experience with major chemical and semiconductor materials companies where he held senior positions in R&D management. He has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Materials Science from The Pennsylvania State University and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He joined the San Diego Air and Space Museum as a docent volunteer in the spring of 2022. He enjoys technology, history, and teaching, so being a docent is a perfect fit. He and his wife, Linda, live in Carlsbad.
Membership
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego is a membership program for adults over the age of 50 who want to be part of a learning community with peers. We are committed to providing our members with intellectually stimulating learning opportunities throughout the year. Each quarter, Osher features lectures and seminars by the outstanding faculty and researchers of the UC San Diego community, as well as local leaders, artists and musicians. Class topics include medicine, science, law and society, history, art and humanities, international relations, literature, politics and social sciences. Informed, member-led discussions of current events, live drama, music, periodic field trips and social gatherings enhance the Osher experience at UC San Diego.
Osher at UC San Diego is a volunteer-run organization under the administrative auspices of UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies. Our 800+ members elect executive officers and council members to establish organizational policy and to oversee a variety of volunteer committees, including: curriculum, fundraising, membership relations, hospitality marketing and communications, events and field trips, and theater world.
As a Member you will have access to lectures and seminars every day, offered on campus AND simultaneously streamed LIVE via Zoom. These sessions will include question and answer sessions with our distinguished faculty speakers, art historians, community leaders, and others. Individual class registration is not required. Members can attend all scheduled classes and events or pick and choose the courses that fit their individual schedules. All classes are included in your membership.
An Affiliate Membership will give you access to the video recordings of our lectures from this quarter and those recorded previously, but does not include participation in our daily program.
