The opioid crisis is making headlines daily. Exposure to fentanyl* poses a serious risk to law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, crime scene investigators, labs and other employees. This class will provide information, tools and resources to assist those responsible for the health and safety of these employees. The class will focus on the current guidelines for a risk based approach to the problem and will include procedures to reduce the risk. Personal protective equipment and other controls will be described and demonstrated. The use of respiratory protection (especially the P100 respirators) will be discussed thoroughly, including how to manage a respiratory protection program and conduct respirator fit testing.
*Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids
By the end of this course, students will be able to identify potential exposure to fentanyl, use a risk based approach to protect employees from exposure, select appropriate personal protective equipment including respiratory protection, apply concepts to develop a respiratory protection program including fit testing, and understand appropriate actions to take in the event of an employee exposure.
