NEW Course - Fundamentals of 5G NR
Current wireless cellular systems are projected to be replaced by a significantly faster and more versatile new generation of wireless technology – 5G. In this new online course, you will learn the fundamentals of 5G NR (New Radio) – the radio access network of 5G. The materials will be based on the standards (3GPP Technical Specifications Releases 15, 16,)17 with insights drawn from the instructor’s first-hand experience in contributing to the 5G standards. Simple examples and exercises will be provided to help the students grasp the key concepts. Various topics will be taught with a holistic view by ways such as analyzing the call flows and comparing various techniques. Hands-on projects will be available to those students who want to have an in-depth understanding of certain topics.

- Waveforms: OFDM, DFT-spread-OFDM
- Numerology, frame structure, HARQ
- Channel coding (LDPC and polar code)
- Massive MIMO: precoding, CSI feedback
- Beamforming: hybrid beamforming, beam management of mmWave

- Advanced Quality of Service (QoS) support in 5G
- Co-existence between NR and LTE
- NB-IoT and Non-terrestrial Network (NTN)
- Online delivery provides participants with schedule flexibility
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Apply key technologies of 5G NR (New Radio), the global 5G standard for a new radio access network designed to support a wide array of 5G device-types, services, spectrum and deployments
- Analyze 5G use cases, including Enhanced Mobile Broadband (EMBB), Ultra Reliable and Low Latency Communication (URLLC), massive Machine Type communication (mMTC)
- Understand the rationales behind various technologies
- Explain the differences between NR and LTE

Liangping Ma is with Qualcomm, where he works on 3GPP standards, including non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and multimedia systems. He was with InterDigital from 2009 to 2019, where he worked on cellular standards and video transmission over various communication networks. Up to 2009, he was with San Diego Research Center Inc., and Argon ST (acquired by Boeing), where he led the development of a modem for wireless sensor networks. He was an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer from 2017 to 2020. He is the inventor/co-inventor of more than 300 granted/pending patents with USPTO and 800+ worldwide, and the author/co-author of more than 50 journal and conference papers. Yi, Byung
Byung K. Yi, Ph.D. was EVP & CTO of InterDigital until his retirement in 2018. As CTO of InterDigital, Dr. Yi was responsible for directing the development of advanced wireless and network technologies, advanced research on Robotics, advanced cybersecurity systems for the IoT systems, and the platform for advanced wireless communications.
Prior to joining InterDigital in April of 2014, Dr. Yi served as Assistant Division Chief with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in charge of engineering, of polish division 2012 - 2014.
