Teaching English to the Young Learner (TEYL)

Who should take this program?

International Students who are already enrolled in the full-time Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate program or the Special Studies in TEFL certificate program, and who are interested in attaining additional competencies in teaching English as a foreign language, may enroll into the Teaching English to the Young Learner (TEYL) program for an additional certificate fee of $100 USD.

This certificate can be fulfilled by taking 3 required courses (3 units each) and an additional 3 units of electives. The required courses and electives are not all offered in one quarter. It may take up to three quarters to complete this certificate, and students will need to pay for the additional units that are not included within the full-time TEFL and Special Studies in TEFL certificate programs.

What this program includes:

The required core courses are:

  • Teaching English to the Young Learner I: Focus on the Teacher (3 units)
  • Teaching English to the Young Learner II: Focus on the Learner (3 units)
  • Teaching English to the Young Learner III: Focus on the Classroom (3 units)

Students can choose 3 units from the available workshops each quarter:

  • Bookmaking in the EFL Classroom: Artistic Approaches to English Literacy Skills (1-unit)
  • Visual Media in the EFL Classroom (1 unit)
  • Games in the EFL Classroom (1 unit)
  • Music in the EFL Classroom (1 unit)

  • January 7 - March 22
  • December 6, 2013
  • April 1 - June 13
  • March 21, 2014
  • June 24 - September 6
  • June 13, 2014
  • September 23 - December 6
  • September 12, 2014

 

Note: Application fee, application form, financial verification, and all supporting documents must be submitted prior to the application deadline or students must pay a $100 USD TEFL late-submission fee.

Admission Requirements:

The minimum requirements to be accepted into this program are listed below. We carefully review the background and qualifications of each applicant to ensure that those admitted into the Teaching English to the Young Learner program will have a successful experience.


Language Requirement
Prospective students must have one of the following scores to participate in this program:
  • TOEFL paper-based: 540
  • TOEFL internet-based: 78
  • TOEIC: 740
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • Cambridge Advanced or Proficiency Exams: Pass
  • TEPS: 660

Other Admission Requirements:
  • Copy of transcripts in English for the two most recent years of academic studies
  • A one-page statement explaining why you would like to take any TEFL Certificate program

 

Program Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday, occasional Saturdays
  • Daytime and evening courses
  • Schedule varies

Location:

Most classes are held on the UC San Diego Extension campus in La Jolla or at the off-site University City Center near to campus.

Access to a car or other reliable transportation is required for evening and off-site classes.

Cost (In U.S. Dollars):

Note: You may only enroll into the TEYL certificate while you are already studying in one of our full-time TEFL certificate programs.

  • TEYL certificate Fee: $100 (nonrefundable)
  • International Student Service Fee: $350 per quarter
  • Books/Materials: Approximately $200-$800 per quarter
    (Payment for all books and instructional materials CANNOT be made in advance and are to be purchased upon arrival at UC San Diego.)
