Teaching English to the Young Learner (TEYL)

Who should take this program?

International students who are already enrolled in the six-month Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate program or the Special Studies certificate program, and who are interested in attaining additional competencies in teaching English as a foreign language. This certificate can be fulfilled by taking 3 required courses (3 units each) and an additional 3 units of electives. The required courses and electives are not all offered in one quarter. It may take up to three quarters to complete this certificate.

What this program includes:

The required core courses are:

  • Teaching English to the Young Learner I: Focus on the Teacher
  • Teaching English to the Young Learner II: Focus on the Learner
  • Teaching English to the Young Learner III: Focus on the Classroom

Students can choose 3 units from the available workshops each quarter:

  • Bookmaking in the EFL Classroom: Artistic Approaches to English Literacy Skills (1-unit)
  • English through Drama and Puppetry (1-unit)
  • Games in the EFL Classroom (1-unit)
  • Teaching Pre- and Primary Greades (ages 3 to 8 years) (1-unit)
  • Teaching Elementary Levels (ages 8 to 11 years) (1-unit)
