Understanding the “why” of design
This course offers a survey of the historical and cultural events, technical innovations, art and design movements and important designers and typographers that have formed the origins of the art form that we now call graphic design. Students will develop taste for design by observing and thinking about design. Design history gives you more to compare, which helps you recognize and sort designs into good, bad, and not sure. Even if most everything ends up in the not sure pile, you’ve already begun to develop your taste.
