UC San Diego Extension’s revitalized Global Lactation Alliance offers accredited, comprehensive programs and trainings from some of the lactation industry’s most recognized leaders.


Courses Are Now Being Offered:

Lactation Specialist
  • Become a Lactation Specialist
    3-Day Training
  • This competency based program trains participants to be a Lactation Specialist, as well as fulfills the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative requirements (BFHI), Step 2.

    Participants will obtain the most up-to-date information in the lactation field. A comprehensive overview of basic skills is incorporated in the training along with the most current information and recommendations for consistency in practice.

Lactation Educator Counselor (CLEC)
  • Become a Certified Lactation Educator Counselor (CLEC):
    Available online or in-class.
  • Comprehensive, 45-hour course designed for healthcare professionals working with pregnant and lactating women. Topics include basic anatomy and physiology of lactation, early attachment of the baby, hospital care, support during the postpartum stage, common concerns and solutions, and appliances and apparatuses used in breastfeeding. At completion of the course students are "Certificated Lactation Educator Counselors". The Certification is valid for 5 years from the date printed on the certificate.
Refresher: Lactation Educator Counselor
  • Refresher for Lactation Educator Counselors
    10-hour re-certification training for Lactation Educator Counselors.
  • A periodic update of education essentials for best practice. This course will update the UC San Diego CLEC certificate terms for an additional 5 years.
Lactation Consultant - Pathway 1
  • Lactation Consultant - Pathway 1
    Available online every quarter - 2 quarters in length*
  • This Lactation Consultant Pathway 1 professional certificate program expands the clinical knowledge of the breastfeeding professional who interfaces with the breastfeeding client by understanding problems of clinical management.
    Certification as a lactation consultant is approved preparation for healthcare providers who interact and triage infant nutrition problems and concerns. The course of study is based on objectives, guidelines and competencies established by LEAARC.
    Although UC San Diego does not issue the credential of Lactation Consultant, they support the IBLCE.

  • Lactation Consultant - Pathway 2
    CAAHEP-accredited Program

  • Offered once a year in Fall - 3 quarters in length*
    *Meets the IBLCE Pathway 2 clinical and didactic requirements for the IBLCE exam.

Meet Gini Baker

Gini Baker

Virginia Baker, RN, MPH, IBCLC, FILCA 
Gini is a practicing lactation consultant at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and the Perinatal Health program coordinator for UC San Diego Extension. She coordinates and teaches the Lactation Specialist and Lactation Educator programs and the Lactation Consultant Certificate. Ms. Baker has over 25 years of experience in childbirth, lactation instruction and program development. Gini is the lactation program developer and internationally acclaimed speaker and conference presenter.
