ThinkCERCA is proud to partner with the University of California, San Diego to offer a practicum in Secondary Foundational Reading and Linguistics.  Led by the designers of our course, this experience will provide training and support for practitioners addressing the needs of adolescent learners in middle and high school classrooms.

From topics such as Decoding to Vocabulary Building, the course will meet in a hybrid format to allow for nine, 90-minute direct instruction and collaboration opportunities as well as job-embedded planning, practice, and reflection. There is also an asynchronous version. Teachers will receive 4.5 quarter units/credits (3 semester units/credits) of post-baccalaureate credit for this 8-week/45-hour course from the University of California, San Diego.

This course is designed to equip practicing educators with the essential knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach and support the reading and language development of adolescents. Participants will delve into the foundational principles of literacy instruction, exploring the intersection of linguistics and pedagogy in the context of adolescent learners.

Who should enroll?

  • Teachers of adolescents who have an interest or responsibility to support reading achievement. Post-baccalaureate, graduate-level credits are available.
  • Students who excel in online courses are generally organized, motivated, independent, and have good time-management skills. 

​How do I register?

  • Register right on this page. Shortly after, you will receive enrollment information from the university related to setting up your Canvas account, course access directions, and tech assistance support if needed. In addition to enrollment information, you will receive initial correspondence with the course instructor, Dr. French. 

​Will I have a UCSD transcript?

​What is the format of the summer course?

  • Our summer course is designed specifically for the busy educator in mind; therefore the summer course is intensive and covers eight weeks of instruction in two (2) or four (4) weeks. 

  • Students in the summer course who want to complete the course in two (2) weeks will:

    • Attend a daily 60-90 minute, synchronous session (7am PST, 8am MST, 9am CST, 10am EST)

      • Week 1: M, T, Th, F (no session on Juneteenth holiday)

      • Week 2: M, T, W, Th

    • Spend 4-5 hours completing out of class required work per day over two weeks (reading articles, writing responses, participating in discussion boards, creating mock lesson plans)

  • Students in the summer course who want to complete the course in four (4) weeks will:

    • Attend a daily 60-90 minute, synchronous session (7am PST, 8am MST, 9am CST, 10am EST)

      • Week 1: M, T, Th, F (no session on Juneteenth holiday)

      • Week 2: M, T, W, Th

    • Spend 2-2.5 hours completing out of class required work per day (reading articles, writing responses, participating in discussion boards, creating mock lesson plans)

​​What is the format of the fall course?

  • The fall course includes the same content as the summer intensives, spread across eight weeks. 

    • There will be a weekly 1.5 hour synchronous option (5pm PST, 6pm MST, 7pm CST, 8pm EST)

      • Based on preferred learning style, students may choose to attend synchronously or watch the recording asynchronously. 

    • Students will spend approximately 4 hours per week completing out of class required work (reading articles, writing responses, participating in discussion boards, creating mock lesson plans)

    • The course has 8 weeks of content; students have 10 weeks to complete the course. We have added two additional weeks to account for anything that may come up where you might need to take some time off. That said, all students must complete the course within the 10 week time frame to earn the credit.

​What happens if I need to drop the course? 

  • The course is non-refundable. 
Can I take the class as non-credit and pay a reduced tuition? 
  • No. Online classes are taken for credit, and the per-credit tuition applies. 

​Are there installment plans available?

  • No.

  • There is no financial aid available. 
What are the technical requirements for an online course? 

  • All online courses require an internet connection. The course is offered through UCSDs Canvas software, a web-based learning system. Generally, you’ll interact with Dr. French and other students via email, discussion boards, interactive chat rooms, or video conferences.
