About the Biotechnology Project Management Program

During this trying time brought on by COVID-19, UC San Diego Extension remains committed to helping you achieve your goals. All courses within this certificate program are offered entirely in an online asynchronous format.

The biotech industry has a distinct set of requirements for the project manager. Managing various discovery, development, testing and manufacturing processes within a highly-regulated and creative environment poses unique project management challenges, not usually covered in foundation curriculum or traditional industry experience. Developing new biotechnology and pharmaceutical products is an extremely complex and highly regulated process. Specialized, highly trained project managers play an essential role in shepherding these valuable products through the pipeline and bringing them successfully to market.

Seattle and San Diego are two west coast centers of the biotechnology industry with the ability to address this professional challenge. The joint online Biotech Project Management Specialized Certificate Program through UC San Diego Extension and University of Washington Professional and Continuing Education is intended for product managers, manufacturing managers, quality managers and scientific, clinical research or regulatory specialists engaged in biotech product design, development and control. The program is ideal for individuals who are trying to move into the biotech industry by learning project management processes for completing and delivering a biotech product within budget and on schedule.

In this four-course online certificate program, we’ll cover the product development process from start to finish. You’ll explore the key skills needed for project management within the biotech environment from a clinical, technical and regulatory perspective. Then you’ll practice applying this knowledge to the biotech and drug development life cycle. Get prepared to make an impact in this exciting, rapidly changing field.

Participants must have a BS or BA and a minimum of 2 years of project-related work experience. The Autumn 2021 program begins in September 2021. Applications will open on May 19, 2021.To apply, please visit the University of Washington's Biotechnology Project Management certificate website.
