Revenue cycle is a necessary process in all U.S. healthcare delivery systems to collect revenue for healthcare services provided. Recently, more emphasis has been placed on having qualified staff working in these areas to ensure an effective and efficient process in the collection of revenue. Having quality trained staff working in the revenue cycle is critical for healthcare organizations seeking to capture their revenue collected for healthcare services provided. Developed with a panel of revenue cycle experts, this specialized certificate includes 3 courses that are 3.0 units each (9 unit’s total). Students will learn how to effectively work in all areas of the revenue cycle, a skillset that can be applied to multiple healthcare delivery systems.
Revenue cycle management is the set of financial and operational processes, utilizing the electronic health record and billing and coding software that tracks patient care episodes from scheduling and registration to final payment of a balance. Hospitals and other healthcare organizations need to have a viable and effective revenue cycle team to optimize cash receivables. The opportunity to improve healthcare revenue cycle management within the healthcare landscape is ongoing, as it is an ever-changing environment. Regardless of changes from the political climate and whether the U.S. healthcare system stays with our current model, moves to a complete Value Based model, or implements Medicare for all, hospitals and healthcare organizations will continue to have a need for skilled revenue cycle employees to ensure the financial health of the organization. Without a viable, effective revenue cycle management in place, hospitals and other healthcare organizations can receive lower reimbursements leading to decreased revenues.
The Specialized Certificate in Healthcare Revenue Cycle (RC) provides students with an advanced skill set that sets them apart from other individuals seeking entry into the healthcare revenue cycle field. The required courses provide a foundation in revenue cycle processes and best practices.
Students will explore a range of tools and resources needed to optimize revenue cycle including how to verify insurance eligibility and determine benefit levels, the different claim forms and the importance of collecting accurate information for submission, how to successfully appeal denied claims, and more. Students will also learn how to effectively communicate to patients and provide exceptional customer service.
Having skill sets in revenue cycle is necessary to work in the revenue collection arena of all healthcare systems. According to Burning Glass, job postings in revenue cycle have increased 168% since 2010, there have been more than 187,777 job postings for revenue cycle nationwide, and more than 2,330 jobs in San Diego County alone. Some of the most requested skills for these positions are customer billing, customer service, scheduling, medical coding, medical terminology, ICD-10, CPT Coding, HIPAA, and electronic health records . Moreover, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that employment of healthcare occupations is projected to grow 18 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.4 million new jobs. Healthcare occupations are projected to add more jobs than any of the other occupational groups. This projected growth is mainly due to an aging population, leading to greater demand for healthcare services.
