Featured Speaker: Anne Haule, J.D.
My trip with the group “Road Scholar” included Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham — cities that we know as the epicenter of the Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s. We saw the slave markets, looked through the bars in the Birmingham jail from which Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his letter to other faith leaders, explored the lynching monument memorializing 4,000 men, women, and children who were killed for imaginary wrongs, and sat on the bus in which Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat. Visiting these historic places made the Civil Rights Movement real. They highlighted the extraordinary courage of the leaders and ordinary people of the movement who sacrificed so much for freedom and justice.
